EMS Residency, Stockholm 2018

I am delighted to have an opportunity to attend an 11 day residency at EMS Stockholm. My goal is to complete an 8-channel soundscape piece using field recordings gathered at residencies that I attended at Atlantic Centre for the Arts, New Smyrna Beach, Florida where I worked with composers Jonty Harrison and Natasha Barrett.
The materials that I am working with include a variety of field recordings, which were gathered during two separate residencies using many different microphone techniques such as recording with contact mics, DPA omni directional, hydrophones, M&S set up and soundfield. I am also working with a variety of new spatialisation and ambisonics tools such as ATK (Ambisonic Tool Kit), Ambix, SpatGRIS, not to mention working with a new DAW such as REAPER. I have used Reaper many times but this is my first time to compose a work with it moving away from Pro Tools. I have also been using BEASTtools to spatialise and process sound materials such as taking a stereo/mono file, processing and spatialising it to a ring of 8 loudspeakers. I am also processing some sounds in Ableton.

EMS provides a welcoming and inspiring environment with wonderful studio facilities where composers and artists gather on their lunch and coffee breaks and discuss their work. Everyone is eager and curious as to why you are there and what you hope to achieve. I have only been here 2 days and I already feel at home. The cold weather encourages me to stay in the studio and continue working creating a perfect working environment.
